Weaving with Ancient Designs
10 years ago, I completed a degree in Archaeology with a dissertation focus on the differences between Anglo Saxon and Viking influences on weaving in Britain during the 5th to 10th centuries. As I explored further, as early as the 9th century BCE, I discovered there was also archaeological evidence of beautiful weaving found in the Celtic sites of the European Iron Age. As a result of all this research and reading, I started to look at my own weaving very differently. I was intrigued by the idea of re-creating these colorful designs on a modern loom, and exploring the ancient techniques of tablet weaving, nålbinding and sprang as well.
I created this site to document my project: weaving modern textiles inspired by these ancient designs. After a few years’ hiatus, I am pleased to dive back into this field now, and see what a lot more there is to learn!
